In a press conference held on Thursday, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, denounced Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s recent move to demolish the newly constructed Rivers State House of Assembly quarters situated along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Addressing the media, Speaker Amaewhule expressed dismay over Governor Fubara’s alleged attempt to dismantle the state’s legislative quarters, emphasizing that such actions are a blatant violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the laws of the State. He condemned the Governor’s disregard for legal protocols and accused him of becoming the chief perpetrator of lawlessness.

Highlighting the significance of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters, Speaker Amaewhule noted that it stands as one of the finest in Nigeria, constructed during the tenure of the immediate past Governor, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike. He underscored that the quarters were built specifically for Members of the House of Assembly, not for the Executive arm of government.

The Speaker voiced his disappointment at Governor Fubara’s interference with legislative affairs, asserting that such actions are unbecoming of a sitting Governor tasked with upholding the sanctity of the law and democratic principles. He criticized the Governor’s alleged mobilization of thugs to invade the official residence of Assembly Members, accusing him of attempting to demolish property funded by taxpayers without consulting the legislative body.

Speaker Amaewhule further lamented Governor Fubara’s purported focus on demolition rather than developmental projects, contrasting his actions with those of other Governors dedicated to enhancing the welfare of their constituents. He reaffirmed the resolve of the Members of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly to continue their legislative duties in the interest of good governance, asserting that the Governor holds no authority over the legislature as it is a creation of the Constitution.

The Speaker’s condemnation underscores growing tensions between the executive and legislative branches in Rivers State, raising concerns about the rule of law and constitutional governance in the region.
