Amidst mounting controversy surrounding the alleged misappropriation of the 10-billion-naira Airport Fund by the previous administration led by Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has accused the former government of transferring the funds into 32 different company accounts without fulfilling the intended purpose of constructing the proposed airport.
Governor Otti made these revelations during his monthly interactive media chat with journalists, titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held at the Government House in Umuahia. He disclosed that the funds were transferred out of the Abia State Government account before seeking approval from the Abia State House of Assembly for the Abia Airport Project.
According to Otti, the management of FEROTEX Construction Company, purportedly involved in the project, admitted that they never applied to be awarded the contract for the aborted Abia State Airport Project under Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration.
In response to the allegations, Otti criticized the previous administration’s denial and emphasized discrepancies between the government’s claims and available evidence. He highlighted transactions where large sums were debited from the government account, purportedly for the airport project, before seeking approval from the State Assembly.
Furthermore, Otti raised questions regarding the involvement of FEROTEX Construction Company, stating that the company admitted to lacking experience in airport construction and never applied for the contract. He expressed concerns over the transfer of funds to numerous company accounts as directed by the former Abia State Government.
Governor Otti affirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability by announcing plans to publish the report of the forensic audit into the aborted Abia Airport Project. He reiterated the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the alleged misappropriation of public funds.
