Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is in deep mourning following the death of Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the revered former Governor of Anambra State known as “Okwadike of Igbo-Ukwu.” This latest loss comes on the heels of a string of prominent Igbo figures, leaving the community bereft.
Expressing immense sadness in a statement, Ohanaeze National Publicity Secretary Dr. Alex Ogbonnia described Ezeife as a multifaceted titan – “an erudite scholar, astute bureaucrat, brave fighter, and accomplished politician.” He lauded Ezeife’s unwavering commitment to morals, justice, and equity, calling him a champion of progressivism and a voice against injustice.
Ogbonnia highlighted Ezeife’s unwavering principles through concrete examples. He emphasized Ezeife’s willingness to challenge military might during the Moshood Abiola saga, demonstrating his steadfast commitment to justice. Ezeife’s foresight in advocating for Nigeria’s re-federalization and restructuring was also underscored, showcasing his dedication to a fairer and more equitable nation.
Beyond his political convictions, Ezeife was remembered for his compassion and connection to the common man. Ogbonnia portrayed him as “a man on the side of the masses, the vulnerable, and the downtrodden,” highlighting his championing of the less fortunate.
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, was reportedly deeply affected by Ezeife’s passing, lamenting the recent string of losses within the Igbo community. Prof. George Obiozor, Prof. Joe Irukwu, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, Dr. Sylvanus Olisanye Ebigwei, and now Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife – their absence leaving a profound void.
Ogbonnia eulogized Ezeife as a quintessential Igbo figure, embodying the community’s values and contributing immensely to the nation. He described Nigeria as having lost a rare gem, someone whose multifaceted contributions left an indelible mark on the country.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on behalf of all Igbo people, extended its deepest condolences to Ezeife’s family, the Igbo-Ukwu community, and the people of Anambra. While preparing for a fitting farewell, they implored the Almighty to grant Ezeife eternal peace.
