Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on a decorated career that included league titles, European success, and international appearances for Spain.
Former Chelsea FC captain César Azpilicueta has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old defender, who currently plays for Sevilla FC, confirmed the decision on Friday through a message shared on social media.
Reflecting on his career, Azpilicueta expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships built throughout his years in football.
“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” he said.
“I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
Azpilicueta’s final professional appearance is expected to come when Sevilla travel to face RC Celta de Vigo.
The Spanish defender began his professional career with CA Osasuna before moving to Olympique de Marseille in France.
He joined Chelsea in 2012 and went on to enjoy one of the most successful periods of his career at Stamford Bridge, winning two Premier League titles and lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy while serving as club captain.
Known for his versatility, Azpilicueta played across multiple defensive positions, including right-back, centre-back and left-back.
After more than a decade in England, he moved to Atlético Madrid in 2023 before joining Sevilla for what has become the final chapter of his playing career.
