Tuchel Defends Bold England World Cup Squad Selection, Targets Glory
England coach insists team balance matters more than star power after leaving out several high-profile names
England manager Thomas Tuchel says he has no regrets over omitting several top players from his World Cup squad, insisting his focus is on building the right team capable of winning the tournament.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has defended his decision to leave out several high-profile players from his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he remains confident in his selections and focused on delivering success.
Speaking on Friday, the German tactician said he was not afraid to exclude “extraordinary talents” if doing so helped create the strongest possible team.
Among the notable omissions from England’s squad are Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, Adam Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Luke Shaw.
Tuchel, who took over from Gareth Southgate with a mandate to lead England to World Cup success, said squad chemistry and balance were more important than simply selecting the most talented individuals.
“From day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select the best 26 most-talented players,” Tuchel said.
“Teams win championships, it’s as simple as that.”
The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager acknowledged that narrowing down the final list involved difficult decisions but insisted he had full confidence in the process.
“It was a given that from these 55 players in the provisional squad, we have to leave some extraordinary talents and extraordinary personalities at home,” he said.
Tuchel added that the decisions took weeks and months of evaluation and believed they would ultimately give the squad greater clarity and competitive edge.
One of the biggest talking points was the inclusion of Saudi-based striker Ivan Toney, whose call-up surprised many observers after limited appearances for England since Euro 2024.
Tuchel admitted the decision came as a surprise but said the striker offers qualities the squad needs.
According to the coach, Toney’s physical presence, finishing ability, aerial strength, and effectiveness in set-piece situations make him an important option alongside captain Harry Kane.
Tuchel also outlined his broader vision for the squad, saying he wants to build a strong sense of unity and “brotherhood” within the team.
“The goal is to try to win it and not be shy about it, and then just to respect the game and the opponents and the amount and the obstacles that come with the tournament itself,” he said.
England will begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 before facing Ghana and Panama in their remaining group-stage fixtures.
