In a significant development, the governments of the United Kingdom (UK) and Enugu State have expressed their commitment to a partnership aimed at achieving mutual economic benefits. The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, and the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, conveyed their intentions during a recent meeting at the Government House in Enugu.
Dr. Montgomery, showing his support for the new administration’s investment and economic growth drive, emphasized the longstanding collaboration between the UK and Enugu State. Over the past two decades, the partnership has focused on crucial areas such as public health sector reforms, education, and power sector reforms.
During his visit, the British High Commissioner expressed keen interest in understanding the priorities of the new government and exploring further areas of collaboration. He acknowledged the ongoing reforms in Nigeria to revitalize the economy and expressed optimism about the potential for higher growth in the South East region and specifically Enugu State.
Governor Mbah, reflecting on Enugu’s historical significance and aspirations, shared the ambitious vision of transforming the state into a premier destination for investment, business, living, and tourism. Recognizing the importance of partnerships to achieve these goals, he highlighted the historical collaboration between Enugu State and the UK. Governor Mbah further emphasized the need to restore the British Council and the UK visa facilitation center in Enugu to enhance trade, investment, and cooperation between the UK and the state.
The Governor also sought the technical assistance of the UK government in areas such as power development, particularly in building the Enugu electricity market and regulatory commission. Additionally, he requested support in establishing Enugu State as a special agro-allied processing zone, aligning with the state’s plans for economic growth and development.
Governor Mbah revealed that Enugu State would host the Investment and Economic Growth Stakeholder Roundtable in September, leading up to the Enugu State Diaspora and Investment Forum in April 2024. These events aim to showcase the investment potential of the state and attract stakeholders for collaboration and development.
The visit of the British High Commissioner marks a significant step towards strengthening the partnership between the UK and Enugu State. Both parties are eager to explore areas of trade, investment, and collaboration for the benefit of their respective economies. The discussions also highlighted the importance of restoring the UK visa facilitation center in Enugu and sought technical assistance in key sectors such as power and agriculture.
