Father Arrested for Selling 9-Year-Old Son for N400,000, Blames Economic Hardship
Akwa Ibom State Police Command Apprehends Gabriel Okon Ekpiri in Itu Local Government Area
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Gabriel Okon Ekpiri, a father from Ekit Itam Akpan Obong community in Itu Local Government Area, for the heinous act of selling his nine-year-old son for a sum of N400,000. The arrest was made by the Quick Intervention Squad of the Command, according to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, attributing his actions to the influence of the devil and the prevailing economic hardship experienced in the country. The Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durusinmi, strongly condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and entirely unacceptable.
“The CP noted that the act was barbaric and totally unacceptable, and the suspect who was arrested by the Quick Intervention Squad of the Command has confessed to the crime while blaming the devil and economic hardship for his actions,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, amidst the troubling incident, the Commissioner of Police decorated two Deputy Commissioners of Police, DCP Baba Lawan Audu, Area Commander of the Eket Area Command, and DCP Lawal Isa Mani from the Department of Operations. The CP conveyed congratulations from the Acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, and urged the newly promoted officers to enhance their productivity in their respective roles.
Expressing their gratitude, the decorated senior officers, in separate interviews with journalists, expressed their appreciation to the Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police for recognizing their worthiness for promotion. They also pledged their commitment to hard work and dedication in serving the Command.
