Protests Erupt in Kano as Residents Denounce Ongoing Demolitions

Residents of Kano were thrown into a state of fear and uncertainty today as hundreds of individuals took to the streets to protest against the ongoing demolition exercises taking place in various parts of the city and its suburbs.

 

The protest, predominantly led by youth with a few older participants, saw demonstrators voicing their discontent with the government through anti-government slogans. The demonstrations quickly spread to different areas of the historic town, including Salanta and BUK roads, resulting in a confrontation with security agents and subsequent stampede.

 

Despite the turmoil, a group of protesters managed to gather at the site of the recently demolished Daula Hotel before embarking on a march towards the police headquarters. Eyewitnesses reported that the stampede caused injuries to many individuals, while public properties suffered damage and some were even set on fire by the enraged demonstrators, who carried placards bearing various inscriptions.

 

The placards prominently displayed messages such as “Gov Yusuf, your action is sending away investors,” “Don’t bring insecurity to our state, Mr. Governor,” and “Let the law take its course.” These statements reflect the protesters’ concerns about the adverse effects of the demolitions on the state’s investment climate and overall security.

 

Addressing the crowd gathered at Daula Hotel, Zahraddeen Sani Baba, a leader of a non-governmental organization (NGO), vowed that the protests would continue until Governor Yusuf ordered the halt of the demolition activities. Baba criticized the governor, asserting that his actions since assuming office suggested a lack of commitment to the well-being of the people of Kano State. He further argued that Governor Yusuf appeared to be focused on punishing his predecessor and those associated with him, rather than acting within the bounds of the law and protecting innocent Nigerians and their investments.

 

Recent demolition exercises in Kano State have already resulted in the destruction of several structures, with numerous others marked for demolition. Notable locations affected include Daula Hotel, as well as shopping plazas at Polo and Eid grounds.

 

The ongoing protests have heightened tensions in Kano, leaving residents anxious about the implications for investment prospects and overall security. As the demonstrations continue, the demand for an end to the demolitions grows louder, putting pressure on the government to address the concerns raised by its citizens.
