Lionel Messi has sparked fresh fitness concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being substituted during Inter Miami’s MLS clash with Philadelphia Union. While the move raised fears of injury, the club’s coaching staff indicated it was a precautionary decision linked to fatigue rather than a serious setback.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has raised concerns over his fitness ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer encounter against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The 38-year-old forward left the match in the 73rd minute after appearing uncomfortable and holding the back of his left leg during difficult playing conditions caused by wet weather in Miami.
Despite fears of another injury setback, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos suggested the decision was largely precautionary and not linked to a confirmed medical issue.
Speaking after the match, Hoyos said the team had not yet received a medical report but explained that Messi showed signs of exhaustion after playing on a heavy pitch. According to the coach, the decision to withdraw the Argentine star was made to avoid unnecessary risk.
Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup success at 2022 FIFA World Cup, has not officially confirmed his participation in the upcoming tournament. However, he remains widely expected to feature and potentially make a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11 across United States, Canada and Mexico, with Argentina set to open their campaign against Algeria on June 16.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has managed recurring hamstring issues carefully while balancing club and international commitments, although he has continued to remain influential whenever available.
