Tinubu Set to Return Today, Ministerial List Expected After Sallah
Presidency sources hint at possible extension of Tinubu's stay in Lagos
President Bola Tinubu is set to return to Nigeria today after his visit to the United Kingdom, just in time for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. Tinubu’s trip followed his attendance at the ‘A New Global Financing Pact’ summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in France.
While the specific day of his return was not disclosed in the initial statement, sources from the Presidency confirmed that Tinubu would arrive at his private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, later today to mark his first Sallah celebration as President.
During the Eid prayers, Tinubu is expected to join other dignitaries at the Obalende Muslim Prayer ground, located at Dodan Barracks, the former seat of the Nigerian government.
There is speculation regarding the composition of Tinubu’s ministerial list, which is said to be in its final stages before submission to the National Assembly. Sources suggest that Tinubu has personally selected a core group of ministers, influenced by his close circle of Special Advisers (SAs), while the selection of other ministers has become a matter of intense debate.
According to a Presidency source, Tinubu may extend his stay in Lagos until Sunday or Monday before returning to Abuja, even though the holiday officially lasts until Thursday.
It is worth noting that the constitution mandates Presidents-elect and governors-elect to submit the names of their ministerial and commissioner nominees within 60 days of assuming office. However, Tinubu’s team has emphasized that the process will be expedited, citing his previous track record of forming a cabinet within three weeks during his tenure as governor.
In 2015, there was public outcry over the delay in appointing ministers by the Buhari administration, which took approximately six months to complete the cabinet formation process.
