Popular social media personality Solomon Buchi has criticised churches that organised thanksgiving services following Arsenal F.C.’s recent trophy victory, saying the practice is beginning to resemble idolisation and raising concerns about mixing football enthusiasm with religious worship.
Buchi made the remarks while reacting to a viral video showing church members celebrating Arsenal’s triumph.
In the video, he acknowledged being an Arsenal supporter and said many of his family members, friends, and people he admires also support the club. However, he questioned why a church would dedicate a thanksgiving service to a football achievement.
According to him, football victories can be celebrated without introducing them into church gatherings in such a manner.
Buchi stated that while he understands that preachers sometimes make humorous football references to connect with congregants and create a relaxed atmosphere, organised thanksgiving and testimonies centered around football victories cross an important boundary.
He warned that such practices could gradually shift attention away from the spiritual purpose of church and make devotion to sports appear excessive.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with opinions divided between those who see the celebrations as harmless expressions of joy and those who agree that religious worship should remain distinct from sporting achievements.
