Reflecting on the memorable opening match of the 2010 tournament, Foster said he can still remember the excitement created by Siphiwe Tshabalala’s famous opening goal, a moment that remains one of South African football’s most iconic memories.
Speaking ahead of South Africa’s opening fixture against Mexico — a repeat of the match that opened the 2010 World Cup — Foster described the encounter as an important first step in their journey.
“It’s been a long time. I think the first fixture speaks for itself, and I think that’s just the first step on our journey,” he said.
Foster also shared memories of his childhood in Noordgesig, a township in Soweto with a population of about 12,000 people, where football played a major role in his upbringing.
