Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the Federal Government to end what he described as prolonged delays and “deception” surrounding the proposed establishment of state police in Nigeria.
Makinde made the remarks on Friday during a joint mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APM in Ibadan, where he revisited earlier discussions among South-West governors on security restructuring.
The governor recalled that South-West states had initially pushed for the creation of state police but later adopted the Amotekun security outfit after the proposal failed to gain federal approval.
According to him, Amotekun was established as a stop-gap measure to address rising insecurity in the region.
He said the ongoing national debate on state police had become unnecessary, urging authorities to take decisive action rather than prolong discussions.
Makinde maintained that states could implement effective security structures if there is political will, citing the coordinated efforts of South-West governors in setting up Amotekun across participating states.
He further noted that Lagos State did not participate in the initiative, attributing it to political disagreements at the time.
The governor argued that decentralised policing remains a practical solution to Nigeria’s security challenges and insisted that further delays would only worsen insecurity concerns across the country.
