More than 20 construction workers escaped injury after a building under construction collapsed in Anambra State, prompting authorities to seal the site and begin investigations into possible structural and regulatory failures.
No fewer than 20 construction workers narrowly escaped death after a two-storey building under construction partially collapsed in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, caused panic among residents and passers-by as the structure reportedly began giving way after loud cracking sounds were heard from the upper section of the building.
When the scene was visited on Wednesday, the building—reportedly being developed as a hotel—was observed leaning dangerously in multiple directions after suffering structural failure.
A resident living close to the site said more than 20 workers were carrying out construction activities on the second floor when the structure suddenly started collapsing.
According to eyewitness accounts, the workers managed to escape moments before the building gave way, preventing what could have become a major tragedy.
Residents suggested that the speed of construction, heavy rainfall, and possible structural weaknesses may have contributed to the incident. Concerns were also raised over the possible use of substandard materials and poor construction practices.
Following the collapse, officials of the State Urban and Town Planning Department reportedly visited the site, sealed off the premises, and restricted access pending further investigation.
An official at the location stated that authorities had begun assessing the cause of the collapse and would determine whether regulatory approvals and required building standards were followed.
Preliminary findings also aim to establish whether negligence, structural defects, or violations of construction regulations contributed to the failure.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said authorities were aware of the development but noted that full details were still being compiled.
Building collapses continue to remain a concern in several parts of Nigeria, with experts repeatedly calling for stricter compliance with building regulations and improved supervision of construction projects.
