A one-storey commercial building housing eight shops has collapsed in Anambra State following heavy rainfall, triggering panic among residents and traders. Although no lives were lost, the incident left a trail of destruction, with goods, property and nearby structures severely affected by flooding and erosion.
A heavy downpour has triggered the collapse of a one-storey commercial building in Anambra State, sparking renewed concerns over flooding, erosion and infrastructure safety.
The building, located at Ikenga Ogidi near the Building Materials International Market along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, reportedly came crashing down after hours of intense rainfall.
Fortunately, no casualties were recorded as occupants had already closed for business and left the premises before the incident occurred.
Traders Suffer Heavy Losses
While lives were spared, traders and shop owners were not as fortunate financially.
Residents said goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the collapse, while several properties within and around the building sustained extensive damage.
The floodwaters generated by the downpour also reportedly damaged fences and affected nearby structures, leaving many residents counting their losses.
Residents Blame Flooding, Erosion
Residents and traders in the area said concerns had previously been raised about poor drainage systems and recurring flooding whenever heavy rains occurred.
Many attributed the collapse to prolonged erosion, water pressure and inadequate drainage infrastructure around the commercial complex.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rainfall exposed long-standing environmental challenges that had gone largely unaddressed.
Calls for Urgent Government Action
Following the incident, residents called on the Anambra State Government and relevant federal agencies to immediately assess the area and implement measures to prevent future disasters.
They also demanded stricter enforcement of building regulations and improved drainage management across flood-prone communities.
Investigation Underway
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official assessment of the cause of the collapse.
Experts are expected to investigate whether structural defects, flooding, erosion or a combination of factors contributed to the incident.
The collapse comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the ongoing rainy season, which has already prompted flood warnings in several states across Nigeria.
