Igbo think-tank group, the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), has emphasized that the disordered structure of the Nigerian federation is the root cause of the persistent terrorism, banditry, and violence plaguing the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Enugu after their state executive meeting, the national president of the ADF, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, identified restructuring as the key solution to the insecurity and economic crises facing Nigeria. He also proposed a return to the 1963 regional constitution.

Awuzie stated, “The ADF believes that the chaotic nature of the Nigerian federation is the foundation of the ongoing terrorism, banditry, and violence that have made life intolerable in Nigeria today. To establish a fair federal structure based on social justice, we advocate for the reconstitution or renegotiation of the Nigerian Federation.”

He continued, “This should be achieved through the creation of a new people’s Constitution, rather than amending the 1999 Constitution as attempted by the current and former National Assemblies since 1999.”

The ADF president stressed that only a return to Regional Autonomy and Fiscal Federalism could resolve the issues plaguing Nigeria. He called for a return to the 1963 Regional Constitution, which was endorsed by Nigeria’s founding fathers.

Awuzie criticized attempts to amend the 1999 constitution, pointing out that such efforts waste the nation’s resources. He argued that the state houses of assembly, influenced by governors, would not make changes against the governors’ wishes. He concluded by advocating for a truly people’s constitution, emphasizing that the 1999 constitution was imposed on the people by the military.
