Police arrest Umahi’s aides, LG boss, lawmaker, others over NURTW crisis

Notable stakeholders in Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State including the Council chairman, Clement Odah, and the member representing Ohaukwu North State Constituency, Mr Chinedu Awo have been arrested by the police following the killings and destruction of property in Effium and Ezza Effium communities.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Aliyu Garba, effected their arrest, on Sunday. It was gathered that the state government ordered that the stakeholders be arrested following their inability to ensure the return of peace in the affected areas.

Apart from the chairman and the lawmaker, other major stakeholders from the communities who were also arrested include Coordinators of Effium and Effium South Development Centres, Mr Sunday Agbo, and Mrs Eucharia Ogwale, respectively.
A former Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and Special Assistant on Market Development, Emmanuel Uzor, as well as his counterpart in Charge of Parks Development, Mr Emmanuel Igwe, were equally arrested.
A former lawmaker, who represented Ohaukwu North State Constituency and Governor David Umahi’s Special Assistant on Youth Development, Mr Frank Onwe, was also among those arrested.

At least seven persons were reportedly killed while many sustained injuries as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed in Effium and Ezza Effium communities, in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Saturday.

Meanwhil, Governor Dave Umahi has imposed a curfew in Effium community from 4pm to 8am on daily basis in his determination to restore peace and order.

In a statement by Hon Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, the governor expressed dismay at the unabated violence and wanton destruction of lives and property in the affected communities.

“In his determination to restore peace and order, the Governor has imposed a curfew in Effium community from 4pm to 8am on daily basis with effect from Sunday, 24th January, 2021, untill normalcy returns to the affected community.

“The Governor further directs the Security Agencies to ensure the strict enforcement of the curfew and to deal decisively with any person or group of persons involved in killings and or destruction of property of the people no matter whose ox is gored,” the statement noted.
