NERC orders Discos to disconnect electricity consumers who reject meters

‎The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday ordered power distribution companies to disconnect electricity consumers who reject meters.

The Federal Government recently commenced the mass deployment of about six million meters across the country in order to halt estimated billing and improve service delivery in the power sector.

However, operators in the industry report that some electricity consumers are opposed to being metered so as to avoid paying the exact sum for the electricity that they consume.‎

Following the development, the NERC on Wednesday mandated Discos to commence the disconnection of electricity users who opposed being metered.

According to the NERC directive, “Any customer that rejects the installation of a meter on their premises by shall not be entitled to supply and must be disconnected by and shall only be reconnected to the network after the meter has been installed.”
