BNSG, WaterAid donate Handwashing stations to clinics and IDP camp

 

The Benue State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (BERWASSA) in collaboration with WaterAid Nigeria has provided handwashing facilities to clinics and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Makurdi and Guma local government areas.

The gesture was part of activities to mark this year’s
Global Handwashing Day according to a release by the BERWASSA Information Officer, Ephraim Hemben.

The day is celebrated every 15 of October to raise awareness about the importance of effective hand hygiene, especially through handwashing with water and soap at critical times and further trigger lasting change from policy level to community driven action.

This year’s theme, ‘Hand Hygiene for All’, is a call to action to make hand hygiene a reality for all more so that the current COVID-19 pandemic highlights the critical role hand hygiene plays in disease transmission and control.

Presenting five semi-permanent handwashing stations each to FSP clinics at Daudu and Agan, and inclusive-permanent handwashing station to Internally Displaced Persons camp, Abagana, the representative of Benue State Governor, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Environment, Mr. Wilfred Ogli said the gesture was an indication that handwashing with soap must be a priority to all now and in the future.

He said the effort was to ensure that no one is left behind concerning effective handwashing as the inclusive-permanent handwashing stations are designed to accommodate People Living With Disability and thanked WaterAid Nigeria for the collaboration.

Speaking, the General Manager of BERWASSA, Mrs. Torkwase Ikyaator maintained that the theme for this year’s celebration provided a reminder that hand hygiene is everybody’s business and immediate action needs to taken by all as response and control to the COVID-19 pandemic and other related illnesses.

In their separate remarks, the Chief Nursing Officer in-Charge of FSP Clinic, Daudu, Mrs. Francisca Nyigbiam, her counterpart at FSP clinic Agan, Comrade Terkimbi Sementu and the Coordinator, Abagana, IDP camp, Mr. Terlumun Enger commended the governor and development partners for providing the facilities that will have far reaching benefits and promised to make good use of them.

The grand finale of the Global Handwashing Day took place at IDP Camp Daudu II, Guma LGA where the Representative of Governor Samuel Ortom commissioned WASH facilities and donated 160 cartons of toilet soap to the IDPs amidst songs, dance, drama from IDPs and demonstration of effective handwashing by development partners, CSOs and other dignitaries.
