Atiku Demands Answers from INEC Over Alleged Unauthorized Access to Voter Registration Database

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain how sensitive information from its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database was accessed and released without authorization.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said INEC’s admission that voter information was accessed through valid official credentials has heightened concerns about the security of the electoral body’s database.

While INEC maintained that its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure was not hacked, Atiku argued that the unauthorized release of information from a restricted database remains a serious issue.

He questioned how voter data stored within INEC’s secure system found its way into the hands of political actors, noting that the information was publicly shared by Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

“Atiku stated that INEC’s confirmation that the information was retrieved using authorized credentials raises troubling questions about internal controls, institutional safeguards, and the possibility of political interference,” the statement said.

The controversy followed a social media post by Olayinka, who published the voter registration details of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Representatives aspirant, Emeka Ike.

According to Atiku, Nigerians deserve a clear explanation of how information obtained from a restricted electoral database was released to individuals outside the commission.

He welcomed the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS), which INEC said has launched an independent investigation into the matter, but insisted that the findings of the probe must be made public.

Atiku warned that public confidence in the 2027 elections depends on the transparency, accountability, and independence of key institutions, stressing that Nigerians must be assured that their personal data is secure and that no political figure enjoys privileged access to the country’s electoral systems.
