Peter Obi Rallies Behind Adeboye, Warns Against Dangerous Ethnic Politics Ahead of Future Elections

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has thrown his weight behind Pastor Enoch Adeboye, cautioning Nigerians against ethnic and religious narratives that could further divide the country ahead of future political contests.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Thursday, Obi expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of weaponising ethnicity, religion and identity politics whenever political actors struggle to compete on ideas, competence and vision.

The former Anambra State governor said Nigerians should draw lessons from the 2023 general elections, particularly developments in Lagos where political debates shifted from governance and policy discussions to ethnic and tribal considerations.

According to him, conversations that should have focused on leadership qualities and the future of the country were overshadowed by divisive sentiments that weakened national cohesion.

“Throughout history, whenever politicians find it difficult to compete on ideas, performance, character, or vision, some resort to exploiting the fault lines of ethnicity, religion, and identity,” Obi stated.

‘Don’t Be Used to Spread Division’

Obi warned that similar tactics appear to be resurfacing as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of future elections.

He noted that many Nigerians unknowingly become tools in campaigns designed to sow distrust and hostility among different groups.

The former presidential candidate urged citizens, especially young people, to be cautious about narratives aimed at creating division and conflict.

“Question every narrative. Verify every claim. Follow the facts. Resist manipulation,” he advised.

Obi Defends Adeboye

Addressing criticisms directed at Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Obi described the revered cleric as one of Nigeria’s most respected spiritual leaders whose ministry has consistently promoted peace, reconciliation, and national unity.

He said attempts to portray Adeboye negatively ignore decades of contributions the cleric has made toward fostering harmony and moral values in society.

“Let me state clearly that Pastor Enoch Adeboye remains one of the foremost fathers of faith in our nation. For decades, he has consistently preached the virtues of peace, prayer, love, reconciliation, and national unity,” Obi said.

The former governor also praised Adeboye’s calm disposition in the face of criticism.

“Even in the face of criticism and provocation, he has continued to respond with humility, restraint, wisdom, and grace.”

‘Nigeria’s Future Is in the Hands of the Youth’

Obi further argued that younger Nigerians must take greater responsibility for solving the country’s challenges rather than expecting elderly leaders to shoulder the burden.

According to him, national transformation requires active participation from the country’s youth population.

“At 84 years of age, it would be unfair for young and able-bodied Nigerians to transfer to him responsibilities that properly belong to them,” he said.

The Labour Party chieftain maintained that Nigeria’s progress depends on citizens choosing unity over division and placing the nation’s collective interests above ethnic, religious or political loyalties.

Call for National Unity

As political conversations continue to intensify across the country, Obi urged Nigerians to remain focused on issues that promote development, accountability and good governance.

He stressed that the country’s future would be better secured through cooperation, mutual respect and shared national purpose rather than divisive politics.
