Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider electronic voting system for future elections in the country in order to address the perennial crisis associated with elections in Nigeria.
Speaking at the grand finale of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign ahead of tomorrow’s local government election in the state at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki, the governor insisted that by the time human elements were totally expunged from the electoral system, violence will equally be greatly reduced.
He said e-voting system was already working in several developed countries of the world, stating that Nigeria was matured to embrace the system in order to finally bring to an end the challenges facing its electoral system.
He said with e-voting, politicians will be forced to effectively market themselves to the people, knowing full well that there will be nothing like vote-buying or ballot box snatching on election day.
He therefore asked his party’s National Chairman,, Uche Secondus, who took part in the campaign to begin to tinker with the idea of adopting e-voting in the conduct of the party’s future elections.
“We have to do everything in this country to support e-voting. When we have e-voting from INEC, all these struggles will stop.
“I want to challenge the national chairman of PDP. It takes us nothing to have our own server. We can start the change we desire with our party, the PDP, so that in the upcoming primaries, we can do our primaries in one day. You just come to the centre and you will see the various positions and those contesting with their pictures and you just thumb print on the ICT platform and it goes to the server. Mr Chairman, this is possible.”
