Oyo Suspends School Excursions After Deadly Abduction Attack as Slain Teacher Is Buried
Government introduces emergency safety measures across schools following the killing of a teacher and abduction of students and staff in Oriire LGA.
The Oyo State Government has suspended all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and off-campus activities following last week’s deadly school attack in Oriire Local Government Area. The decision came as burial rites were held for 49-year-old teacher Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the coordinated assault that also led to the abduction of students and teachers.
The Oyo State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and other activities requiring students to leave school premises following last week’s deadly coordinated attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
The decision comes amid heightened concerns over the safety of students and school personnel across the state after armed attackers invaded multiple schools in Ogbomoso.
Meanwhile, burial rites were held on Friday for Adesiyan Adegboye, a 49-year-old teacher who lost his life during the attack. He was laid in state at Ayegun Baptist Church, Ogbomoso, before being buried later the same day at his residence in the Owolake area.
Adegboye was killed during the assault on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, where several students and teachers were also abducted.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven students were kidnapped from Community Secondary School, while another 18 pupils and seven teachers were abducted from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School during the coordinated attack.
The incident triggered fear across affected communities, leading many parents to withdraw their children from schools over concerns about possible further attacks. Some institutions also temporarily shut down following rumours of insecurity spreading to nearby areas, though authorities later dismissed claims of any attack on the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
In response, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issued a directive introducing stricter safety protocols for all public and private schools.
In a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye, school administrators were instructed to halt all activities involving student movement outside school premises until further notice.
The ministry stated that previously approved outings and events have been suspended, stressing that student safety remains the government’s highest priority.
School administrators were further directed to ensure students remain within school premises during school hours and to promptly report suspicious movements or activities around schools to security agencies.
Authorities said the restrictions would remain in place pending an improvement in the security situation across the state.
