The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the first confirmed recovery from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Health officials said the recovered patient was discharged from hospital and returned to the community after successful treatment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the first recorded recovery from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Speaking on Friday, WHO representative Anais Legand disclosed that the recovered patient was discharged from hospital on May 27 after receiving treatment and was allowed to safely return to the community.
According to the WHO, the recovery marks an important development in efforts to contain the outbreak currently affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Legand described the patient as the first confirmed Ebola survivor from the present outbreak, expressing hope that ongoing response measures would help improve outcomes for other affected persons.
Health authorities in the DRC, alongside international partners including the WHO, continue monitoring the outbreak while strengthening surveillance, treatment and containment efforts to prevent further spread of the deadly virus.
Ebola is a severe viral disease that can spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and has caused several deadly outbreaks across parts of Africa over the years.
The WHO and Congolese health officials have continued urging communities to cooperate with public health measures, including early reporting of symptoms, isolation procedures and contact tracing efforts aimed at limiting transmission.
