President Muhammadu Buhari says it remains his prerogative to hire or fire service chiefs.

The president’s response came hours after the Senate asked the four service chiefs to resign over the deteriorating state of insecurity in the country,

A statement signed by the Special Adviser Media and Publicity to the President Femi Adesina, Buhari told the Senate that it is his prerogative to hire or fire the service chiefs, not theirs.

The president said he would do what is in the best interest of the country at all times.

Earlier, Senator Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East Senatorial District in an amended resolution in a motion moved by Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial district Tuesday requested that all service chiefs should step down.

Senator Betty Apiafi seconded the motion and it was upheld by the Senate President.

Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan in his remarks said senate resolved that there is a need for the government to look into what is happening wrongly in the military.

Adesina’s statement read in parts: “The Senate Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.
“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times.”
