COVID-19: Edo vaccinates over 33,800 community leaders, health workers, others

The Edo State Government has vaccinated over 33, 819 persons in the state’s local government councils with the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine, as part of efforts to contain the pandemic.

Edo State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, gave the charge during the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

He said the 33,819 persons so far vaccinated include health workers and other frontline staff; the elderly and traditional, religious and political leaders as well as other eligible members of the public.

Urging all eligible members of the public to avail themselves of the opportunity and get inoculated against the deadly virus, Obi noted that the state plans to vaccinate about 40, 540 persons in the first phase of the exercise.

He reassured that the government will continue to step up efforts to contain the pandemic and protect citizens, noting that there was need for all residents to comply with preventive protocols to ensure that the government totally ends the pandemic in the state.

The Incident Manager asserted that Edo has continued to record a progressive decline in active cases, case positivity and fatality rates, as well as an impressive rise in recovery rate.

Obi said the state has not recorded any COVID-19 related deaths in the last one month, with four active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation centres in the state.
