2027: Aisha Yesufu Withdraws from FCT Senate Race

Activist steps down after NDC opts not to hold primaries for FCT senatorial seat, shifts focus to broader political goals.

Activist Aisha Yesufu has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She said the party will not conduct primaries for the seat, effectively ending her bid for the 2027 election, while urging supporters to remain focused on wider political objectives.

In a statement released on Friday, Yesufu explained that the decision followed the party’s resolution not to conduct primaries for the FCT senatorial seat.

She noted that while the NDC would not be fielding a candidate through primaries for the Senate position, it would proceed with primary elections for House of Representatives aspirants.

According to her, the development effectively closes the contest for the senatorial ticket under the party’s platform.

Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and keep their attention on broader political goals ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly the presidential race.

She encouraged continued commitment to political participation, expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future.

The activist also expressed appreciation to supporters of her senatorial ambition, acknowledging their efforts and encouragement throughout her campaign journey.

Yesufu further stated that she would continue her political engagements across the Federal Capital Territory, including visits to all six area councils in the coming week to appreciate residents and sustain advocacy for improved governance in the capital.

She had earlier declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing her desire to contribute more directly to governance.

Her withdrawal follows speculation surrounding the party’s alleged decision to favour another aspirant for the ticket, although the NDC has not officially confirmed such claims.
