Ten persons were trapped after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Abuja on Saturday.
One persons was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred behind Dawaki Modern Market, in the Galadima area of the Federal Capital Territory.
Eye witnesses reported that the building totally collapsed to the ground.
Director-General, FCT Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Idris Abbas, said information available to the agency shows that the building was a bungalow which the developer was trying to upgrade to a two-storey structure.
He advised builders to desist from contravening the building plan as approved by the Development Control Department of the FCT.
Also speaking on the matter, Director, Department of Development Control, Mr Muktar Galadima, said his organisation had given the developer a ‘stop work’ notice when it noticed the modification of the building.
He said, “On the 17th of this month, when our officers were moving round and monitoring developments, they noticed the modification of the building from a bungalow to a two-storey building and he was issued a stop-work notice.
“He, however, took advantage of the weekend and resumed work and this incident happened, and due process, as well as engineering process, was not followed.”
