FG threatens to prosecute owners of faulty vehicles, generators‎ ‎

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has threatened to prosecute owners of faulty vehicles and generators that cause air pollution‎ in the country.

The Federal Government agency warned that such persons risk jail terms for failure to fix the mechanical problems.

Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, gave the warning in Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking during a virtual induction workshop for newly accredited Environmental Consultants, Jauro said owners of such vehicles and generators would be barred from using them or given an option of fine or a combination of jail and fine, depending on the gravity of the offense.‎

According to him, the agency would monitor emissions from vehicles and generators in order to ensure that owners complied with stipulated environmental guidelines.‎

Jauro also revealed that plans are underway to launch the National Vehicular Emission Control Programme (NVECP) and the National Generator Emission Control Programme (NGECP), to address air pollution in the country.

Advising the newly inducted environmental consultants, he said,‎‎“Let me use this forum to inform you that environmental consultancy is not an all-comers affair, neither is it a ‘quick-cash carry go’ business.

“Your role is to provide independent, credible and objective verification of information on facilities, with respect to their activities and impact on the environment in line with extant regulations,”‎

Urging the inductees to assist in enforcing environmental laws, he noted that‎ NESREA was ready to partner with them in fulfilling one of its roles as environmental adviser.

In the same vein, he advised that they should encourage their clients to adopt environmental best practices.
