‎The Federal Government has expressed concern over the resumption of primary and secondary schools across the country, as graduating pupils and students commence preparations for examinations.

Most of the schools will resume today, Tuesday, August 4.

However, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, on Monday said the government is worried that the development could worsen the spread of the coronavirus disease in the country.

‎”This is based on the fact that the school system remains a veritable ground for increasing community transmission of coronavirus if appropriate protocols are not put in place and adhered to,” Mustapha said.

He urged stakeholders to ensure compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols to prevent the spread of the disease in the schools.

The SGF added that the PTF was also worried that electioneering activities in Edo and Ondo states could lead to further spread of the disease.

According to him, the PTF was discussing with the Independent National Electoral Commission on safety guidelines for the upcoming elections.

“The national response would continue to guide the adoption of sector specific guidelines and protocols just as the PTF is currently concluding discussions with the INEC on appropriate guidelines to be adopted for elections beginning with the August 8th bye-election in Nasarawa Sate to be followed by those for Edo and Ondo States in September and October respectively.‎

‎”We need to remain alive to enjoy the benefits of our democracy,” he said.
