Indications have emerged that the ongoing protests against police brutality in the country has led to an increase in airfares on domestic routes.
The protests have caused gridlocks on major highways in the country, thereby forcing most travellers to opt for flights instead of buses.
The increase in airfares was mostly observed on weekend flights for one-way trips from Lagos to Abuja.
Hitherto, the cost of flights ranged from N27,000 to N38,000 depending on the class of ticket purchased but Arik Air charged N43, 944 for economy and N99,176 for business class tickets on Sunday.
Also, Aero Contractors charged passengers N34,310 and N87,812 for flexible economy and business class tickets, respectively.
Dana Air also charged between N36,000 and N42,300 for Economy Saver tickets, while Economy Flexible tickets went for 47,000.
In the same vein, prices of tickets on Air Peace ranged from N38,800 to N60,000 for economy flexi while business class flights cost N80,000.
However, operators in the aviation industry said the price increase was not as a result of the ongoing protests.
Spokesman of Dana Air, Kingsley Ezenwa, said the increment was not deliberate, and has nothing to do with the protests. According to him, it was caused by ‘normal industry metrics’.
