Anambra State has been thrown into mourning following the death of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, a distinguished military officer and former United Nations Military Adviser. Governor Chukwuma Soludo described the late general as a global icon whose remarkable service in Nigeria and international peacekeeping missions earned him widespread respect and admiration.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, one of Anambra State’s most accomplished military officers and international peacekeeping figures.
The respected soldier and diplomat reportedly passed away on May 27, 2026, after a brief illness, bringing to an end a distinguished career that spanned decades of service to Nigeria and the international community.
In a condolence message, Governor Soludo described the late general as an exemplary leader whose achievements brought immense pride to Anambra State and the nation.
A Distinguished Military Career
Born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Kaduna State, General Obiakor began his military journey after joining the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the prestigious 10th Regular Course in 1971.
He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps in 1973 and went on to hold several key leadership positions within the military.
Throughout his career, he commanded at regimental, brigade and divisional levels, eventually serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and later as Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters.
First African to Hold Historic UN Position
Beyond Nigeria, General Obiakor earned international recognition through his service in global peacekeeping operations.
He served as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), where he played a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability during a critical period in the country’s history.
In 2008, he made history by becoming the first African appointed as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations in New York, a position that underscored his reputation as one of Africa’s most respected military strategists.
He officially retired from the Nigerian Army in 2011.
